3 Most Common Barn Door Uses for Every Home...

Updated: May 19, 2022

In today’s world of décor, customized barn doors are a popular mainstay in both modern and farmhouse style homes. Known for their durability and charming nature, barn doors are the ideal way to add that special touch while separating closets, bathrooms, bedrooms and more. Surprisingly, a barn door can be used to draw attention to other areas of the home. For instance, maybe you have a charming bookcase or a mid-century style console table. A barn door could easily serve to highlight these other features of the home by making it a similar color. Either way, whether you choose a rustic style door or a more modern look, be sure to keep these 3 most common barn door projects in mind for your home...

Conceal your Bathroom

Your house bathroom is a great place to use a custom barn door. One of the advantages of this style is that it utilizes less floor space than the traditional swinging door. This makes it perfect to fix bathrooms with minimal square footage and will also help in concealing your bathroom. A perfect example of this can be seen in one of our River Oaks projects that we completed for a client. It should go without saying that every handmade barn door from Houston Barn Doors uses a roller system that stands out and adds that special custom feel to the look of the home.

Barn Doors in the Kitchen

Kitchen barn doors are mainly used to conceal a pantry and serves to add extra space for reminders, notes, and grocery lists. The barn door helps create a lot of wall space and gets rid of the unusable space caused by regular swinging doors. A custom barn door would also work in a kids’ playroom or bedroom and could protect your walls from continual crayon scrubbings (Just a thought).

Weird Sized Barn doors

A barn door doesn’t have to be the typical size; it can be customized considering where it will be installed. The unusually sized barn doors from Houston Barn Doors is a perfect solution for weird openings that won't fit regular doors. For instance, in our Del Bello Lakes project we completed a set of entertainment room doors for a homeowner who had a very large opening that required big barn doors. By big, we're talking over 9 feet tall! We were able to build the doors in sections and, at the end of the day, we had a happy customer who loved the finished product.

Another type of opening that we run into a lot comes in the form of laundry openings. Typically this opening will require a door that's at least 55" wide (to cover a side by side washer/dryer set). The only problem is that a door size with a width of 55" is not something you can buy at your local hardware store. It has to be custom-made. These types of doors are where we shine the brightest since we actually build what the big box stores lack.

There are other numerous areas where you can use barn doors in order to beautify and save more space for your home. You can even use the doors to create a dedicated sleeping space in your house if you're considering converting a flex room or office into a bedroom.
