Brief History of Sliding Barn Doors...

Updated: May 19, 2022

For starters, a sliding barn door is a door that opens horizontally by sliding on a rail or a track; it is usually parallel to the room wall. Very few barn doors (or any door for that matter) have been installed using a track on the floor. You'll find that even the oldest sliding door known to man - the pocket door (built in the 1850's), rides on a top mount track and essentially hides itself inside the wall when the door is in the fully OPEN position. The only issue with this is that if there are any problems with the track you have to cut open the nearest wall to fix the darn thing. This can get very expensive when you consider the cost of demo, drywall work (taping/floating/texturing), and required repainting of the entire wall to make certain that the repair is seamless.

Fast forward to today, almost 99% of barn doors utilize a track that sits above the door which holds the "hangers" that are attached to each door "slab". What began as somewhat of an add-on for every house flipping show has morphed into a feature that most homeowners NEED. Yes, you read that right, homeowners need barn doors. There are many factors that contribute to this, but most of them are due to unusual opening widths, very tall door heights, and/or the homeowner doesn't want to bear the burden of paying for a remodel. As a result, they opt for the more affordable and efficient barn door. Think about it, who wants to spend $5,000+ to have multiple contractors rummage through their house just to get a pocket door installed, or a wall put up, when you can easily spend less than half of that to get a barn door installed in less than 3 hours? It's a no-brainer.

Why Barn Doors Are Here To Stay

We repeat...no need to open up walls (YAY!), no need to move electrical sockets (DOUBLE YAY!), and no need to pull permits (TRIPLE YAY!). You essentially knock out three headaches for the price of one. To be blunt, barn doors are here to stay because they're functional and affordable. They can be altered to fit any interior décor for homes of all styles and can be fixed without spending thousands of dollars.

Not to mention, they are excellent ways to divide the room, conceal some items in the house and also to save space. Whatever the form of barn décor you may need, there are excellent custom barn doors that will be appropriate for your home.

The benefits derived from using barn doors cannot be overemphasized; you can use barn doors to separate the bedroom from the living room in a small house or you can use the sliding doors to turn an efficiency apartment into a private 1 bedroom in an apartment building. You can even use them to cover closets.

With barn doors, you can repurpose or convert any wasted space into more usable storage or you can use it to give you more of a visually pleasing aesthetic. Sizeable sliding barn doors can be used to create privacy without closing off the rooms, and this will give space that will allow light to penetrate between the rooms.

Traditional swing doors have long been used as the standard doors in office, home, and hospitality industries. Still, because of their sweeping traveling nature, several spaces are rendered unusable, particularly with more massive doors. Sliding barn door systems, on the other hand, take up the least amount of space during opening or closing. It creates space that can be put to appropriate use.

Have you thought of getting handmade barn doors for your home or business? Start to think of how best you can utilize them in your home or next project because there should be at least one opening that could use the space saving ability of a barn door. You'll be surprised at what comes to mind when you start giving it some serious thought.
